After a previous alcove project in this Edinburgh town house the clients wanted to improve another alcove in their living area. The idea was to create a beautiful and moveable storage unit with shelves above. Substantial in its construction yet still feeling light and floaty, was the brief.
Sapele, an African hardwood of the mahogany family, was the main material used. The solid wood unit was chamfered and mitred to give an interest to the front edge. The doors were slightly set back to emphasise this. Above the shelves are mounted on hidden brackets and are set in from the sides of the alcove, creating a floating effect. We continued this idea across to the solid wood mantlepiece.
