sustainability

Sustainable thinking is at the heart of what we do at Makewood. We want to have a positive effect on our surroundings so we do everything we can to keep our environmental impact as low as possible. Any wood waste is either used to heat the workshop or to fuel the farms biomass boiler which dries grain and keeps the chickens warm in winter!

Our electricity predominately comes from the farm’s wind turbine. Providing a truly green source of power.

We continually try to develop the business in a responsible and sustainable way. An important part of that is reacting against the “throw away” culture by creating timeless, high quality furniture that will last for generations.

Our carbon footprint is low but there are some things, like running a van, which the business can’t do without. We offset this by investing in Forest Credits providing a true carbon saving working towards targeted reforestation and the rehabilitation of degraded forests.

We always try to use locally sourced timber in our work. Always looking for products from responsibly managed forests certified by the UK Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).

There are many other ways to ensure your project has a positive effect on the environment. We are always very pleased to look at ways to make our sustainability ethos even stronger.
